Vine: Jadeveon Clowney Puts Up An Uninspiring 21 Bench Press Reps At The Combine, Called Out By Dee Ford
Most football fans expected South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to tear up every aspect of this week’s NFL combine, but he’s run into some trouble today. After getting marked down for some seriously impressive measurables yesterday, Clowney’s bench press performance leaves a lot to be desired. Clowney was only able to put up 21 reps of the 225 lb bench press, which was less than all-but one of the offensive linemen who lifted earlier. There have also been much smaller players who have outdone Clowney on the bench.

Clowney was also called out today by an SEC rival defensive end, Auburn’s Dee Ford, who had one of the combine’s great quotes when discussing the Gamecock star.
“I’m better. Let’s put it like this. People like to talk about size all the time. Size is pretty much overrated in my eyes,” Ford said. “You can look at guys like Robert Mathis, Elvis Dumervil, Von Miller. These are 6-2 guys and under. People are just looking at the fact that he’s a physical specimen. Honestly if you watch the film, he plays like a blind dog in a meat market basically.
This probably doesn’t hurt Clowney’s stock too much, ultimately, and he still has time to help himself in some of the other tests and in future workouts, but 21 isn’t a great number for a defensive lineman with his expectations.
North Carolina center Russell Bodine currently leads the Combine with his 42 bench press reps.
