Mizzou Quick Hits: Marcus Murphy’s Huge Day

The Missouri Tigers were certainly impressive in their opening win (62-10) over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. The Tigers pounced early and by the seventh minute led 28-0.
Although the game was put out of reach early, Missouri had some very encouraging plays in the second half.
Marcus Murphy, yesterday named the SEC special teams player of the week, had two long punt returns for touchdowns, one of which went 72 yards.
Murphy finished the day with 180 punt return yards on five returns, an average of 36 yards per return. Even though the returns came against a lowly Southeastern Louisiana squad, the fact that the Tiger return game was able to dominate so soundly is a great sign as the team heads into SEC play.
The Tigers are no strangers to having big special teams plays shape the outcome of a game. Against No. 1 Oklahoma two years ago, a kick return on the first play of the game really set the tone for a huge upset. Punt returns will be important next Saturday against Georgia, in a game where field position and special teams play will be vital determinants of who finishes the day on top.
