Mizzou Opponent Analysis: Southeastern Louisiana Lions

Sometimes it takes something big to help us football fans remember what’s most important.
Hurricane Isaac certainly fits the bill, and it is bearing down on the small college town of Hammond. Tomorrow morning, eerily on the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Isaac will reach shore. Mizzou fans are thinking of everyone at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Lets talk some football:
Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) was winless on the road last season and finished the season 3-8; it went 1-6 record in the Southland Conference. The season was so poor that its head coach was fired.
Ron Roberts has stepped in as the new head coach after 5 years as the lead man at Delta State. SELA’s greatest test last year – perhaps its most revealing game in terms of analyzing its talent – came against FCS runner-up champion, Sam Houston State. But the Lions lost at home, 38-9.
So, Mizzou fans can expect a one-sided affair on Saturday, featuring a lot of backups that don’t typically get much playing time.
Key Players For Southeastern Louisiana:
QB Brian Young (Sr.) - Young is entering his final season at SELA, and his second season under center as starting quarterback. He has a tendency to force throws, as evidenced by his 1:1 touchdown to interception ratio last year. This could mean a big day for roaming safeties Matt White and Kenronte Walker.
RBs Zeke Jones (Sr.) and Sam Fairley (Sr.) – Jones, a 2nd season starter, appeared to be off to an excellent season — but an injury derailed him six games in. Fairly, the replacement back, came in and struggled, averaging only 3.5 YPC. Still, an experienced position for the Lions should be considered a strength, and Mizzou will want to deter the run game by jumping out to a big lead early on.
WR Nobody - Literally, nobody. The Lions only return ONE wide receiver that averaged more than 5 yards per game last year. Pretty incredible when you consider that Young passed for almost 3,000 yards last year.
DB Robert Alford (Sr.) – Easily SELA’s most feared player on either side of the ball. Alford was 2nd in the Southland Conference with 5 interceptions last season, enough to earn him 2nd Team All-Conference. Look for him to line up opposite Mizzou’s top receivers all game.
