The Oregon Ducks have found a new leader for their famous blur offense: redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota. Today, the official twitter account for Oregon athletics announced the news:

@GoDucks: Oregon head coach Chip Kelly has named redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota as the Ducks’ new starting quarterback #GoDucks

Mariota beat out sophomore Bryan Bennett for the starting spot, which may have surprised some fans considering Bennett’s productivity in limited action in 2011. In eight games in 2011, Bennett threw for 369 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions.

But while Bennett may be a more polished passer, the top-end athleticism of Mariota earned him the right to start. Ducks fans hope that he can follow in Darron Thomas’ footsteps, and lead fifth-ranked Oregon to great things.
