Why Ohio State Fans Need To Cheer On Michigan
Ohio State fans have been doing some soul searching recently. You see, Michigan’s first game of the 2012 season is against the defending BCS National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide.
Of course, any time I or any other Ohio State fan tune-in to watch TSUN (The State Up North) play a football game, we automatically assume that we’ll be cheering for whichever team they’re playing. However, should that be the case? Aren’t there times when Ohio State fans should root on Michigan?
Many say no way, never. I believe I may be in the minority. On September 1st, 2012, I will be passionately rooting against Alabama, and some may look at that as though I am cheering for Michigan.
Some background: I was raised an Ohio State fan. My basement is painted with the Ohio State stripe surrounding the room and Buckeye memorabilia hanging everywhere. I’m a diehard. And because of that, I hate the SEC and all of its teams. I admit it: I hate them because they’re good. I hate them because Florida smacked OSU 41-14. I hate them because LSU beat us the next year and because Ohio State’s recent record against them is atrocious. I hate them because an SEC team has won the BCS title the last six years and it’s all you hear about. Therefore, when Michigan plays Alabama on September 1st, I may say, “Go Blue!”
Okay, I may have gone a little too far.
I promise, fellow OSU fans, I will never say “Go Blue!”. I even had some issues typing it here. But I want to see Alabama fall. I want to see the indestructible SEC tumble to someone– especially to a Big Ten school. It’s time for the conversation to change. It can’t be about the SEC anymore. It just can’t. Michigan winning would just be the beginning. One step forward for the Big Ten.
Michigan State, Nebraska, Wisconsin – please, keep recruiting. Keep winning. Help out Ohio State and Michigan. Let’s bring the Big Ten back. It will take time, but let’s reclaim the title of Best Conference in the country after so many years of condemnation and harassment. In order to improve, we need to support each other.
That’s why I’ll be rooting for the Michigan Wolverines. It hurts to say. I understand, Buckeye fans. But look at the big picture. We want Michigan to win. It’s good for the Big Ten. It’s good for the whole NCAA.
…plus if they’re ranked higher, it’ll look and feel better when we beat them.
If you feel that you could never root for the Wolverines, I can’t say I blame you. It’s hard. It takes time and practice. One strategy is turning the TV off whenever the fight-song is playing or whenever they’re celebrating. it makes it easier. But to all those who never thought they’d see the day, just know that when Michigan plays Alabama week one, there will be at least one Ohio State fan who’s cheering on the maize and blue.
