UConn Soccer’s Senior Defender Max Wasserman Is Your POW

After a very exciting week for UConn athletics, senior soccer star Max Wasserman clearly stood out above the rest.

In a game with huge implications, fourth-ranked UConn took on twenty-first ranked Washington at Monroe Stadium in Storrs Friday night; a battle that was nationally televised on the Fox Soccer Channel.

The match, as you’d expect, went back and forth, with both teams missing chances to score and put the game away. After a scoreless 90, it was on to overtime, where UConn finally took advantage.

One minute into overtime, senior captain Carlos Alvarez was pulled down by a Washington defender (who was subsequently given a red card). Wasserman stepped up to take the free kick, which was a couple yards beyond the 18-yard box, and conveniently bent the ball around a four man wall and into the side of the net. Game over.

This isn’t Wasserman’s first game-winning goal either. Wasserman notched game-winners in both the Michigan State and SMU games on free kicks as a junior last year in 2011.
