TWICH – This Week in College Hockey

I don’t care if the “NHL might finally end the lockout”, I’m still gonna write about College Hockey. I’m even gonna make an abbreviation for my column. Here are the top games for the weekend.

No. 7 Boston University at ┬áNo. 1 New Hampshire – This Thursday night game features two New England teams within the top ten. UNH Forward Kevin Goumas is off to a blazing hot start, already notching 23 points on the year through 14 games while stud sophomore tendy Casey DeSmith has posted an impressive 10-1-2 record.┬áLast week, the Terriers beat then No. 1 BC at home. Can they beat newly ranked No. 1 Wildcats on the road?

Michigan State at No. 5 Notre Dame – This CCHA game has been a rivalry for years. Sparty and Notre Dame have been competitive in past seasons, but this year is a lot different. Michigan State has not won a game dating back to November 10th vs. Michigan. In that time span, ND has only lost two games (at Boston College and vs. North Dakota). Look for freshman Mario Lucia to make an impact for the Fighting Irish. This past week he was named to the USA Junior Team, and has five points in the six games he has played this year. This game can be seen on NBC Sports Net on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Lake Superior at No. 3 Miami – ESPN’s very own Cawlidge Hawky analyst John Buccigross will be in attendance for this series – one that could be a trap for the No. 3 RedHawks. Lake Superior has been inconsistent all year and has split most of its series so far against solid competition (Alaska, Ohio St, & Ferris St). Miami has not been truly tested this year, but the team is loaded with talent. It has a pair of USA Junior players in Riley Barber (Washington Capitals) and Sean Kuraly (San Jose Sharks) who are some of the best American prospects the US has to offer. Miami should come out firing this weekend and pick up two Ws.

No. 2 Boston College at Providence – Providence is just outside the USCHO’s top 20 and an upset over the Eagles would surely change that. However, this game is important to the hockey community for other reasons. Jerry York is currently tied atop the NCAA record books for most career wins. A win over Providence would leave him all by himself as the winningest coach in NCAA College Hockey history. York has won five NCAA Championships (four at BC, one at Bowling Green) and is an ambassador to the sport. It’s only right that his name be on the top of the College Hockey coaching totem poll.

GAME OF THE WEEK: No. 6 Denver at No. 9 North Dakota – 33 Frozen Four Appearances. 14 NCAA Champions. These two schools are College Hockey royalty, and this weekend series is going to be a battle. Florida Panthers prospect and USA Junior Team member Rocco Grimaldi is second in points for the Sioux and is playing at a very high level this season. As mentioned in previous previews, Nick Shore is still dominating this year as well. It would only be fitting if these two teams split the weekend series in Grand Forks
