Report: Syracuse’s Southerland Under NCAA Investigation For Academics
Mike Waters of Syracuse.com reported today that James Southerland has been benched due to a current NCAA Investigation.
According to the story, Southerland was nearly sidelined for the game against Providence on January 9th, but the issue, dealing with impermissible benefits, was quickly cleared up. The sources say the current suspension is unrelated to the first and deals with academics. One of Waters’ sources says the investigation deals with a term paper. The source said a piece of the paper may have been written by a tutor.
Southerland sat out against Villanova last week in an Orange victory. Syracuse takes on No. 1 Louisville on the road this Saturday, and if Southerland isn’t cleared by tomorrow, he wont be able to travel with the team. That would be a huge blow to the Orange lineup that will need all the fire power it can to take down the Cardinals.
Does the NCAA investigate every term paper every student-athlete writes? Did they just randomly pick Southerland?: syracuse.com/orangebasketba…
