Mike Rice Suspended And Fined $50,000 By Rutgers
Scoop: Mike Rice has been fined and suspended by Rutgers University for violating athletic department policy.
Significance: Associate head coach David Cox will take over as the Scarlet Knight’s interim coach while Rice is suspended. Rice will return against Syracuse on January 2nd.
Story: The Bergen Record is reporting that Rutgers will suspend its head basketball coach for three games and fine him $50,000 for inappropriate behavior and language. Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti said, “This was not an easy decision for me to make but absolutely necessary to ensure what is best for our program.” Rice apologized for his actions and added, “My commitment to becoming a better man and coach is only matched by my passion to make Rutgers basketball a great source of pride for the community.”
Tim Pernetti said this stemmed from practice and involved Mike’s interaction with his players. Also said “it’s a pattern I would say.”
