Mark Emmert Doesn’t Like Jay Bilas Chiming In On NCAA Issues

Update: Jay Bilas has indirectly responded to Emmert’s criticism of his criticism, and it’s about what you’d expect:

Earlier: There is perhaps no bigger critic of the NCAA than Jay Bilas of ESPN. The Bilastrator, a former athlete at Duke, is naturally a huge fan of college athletics, but loves to point out much of the hypocrisy of its governing body on a regular basis. Bilas loves to chime in on the hot-button issues — whether or not athletes should be paid, the fairness of coaches being able to ditch schools at a moment’s notice while players cannot, the college basketball one-and-done rule, or the cases in which the NCAA often restricts its players, such as when Memphis’ Kuran Iverson was suspended for playing a random summer league game.

Bilas commands a huge following, and when he criticizes the NCAA, many people listen. This summer, he single-handedly inspired change from the NCAA when it comes to selling memorabilia by exposing some of its dirtier “likeness” practices. Bilas has been openly critical of NCAA president Mark Emmert, and today at the IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, Emmert fired back at Bilas a bit:

It will be interesting to see if Bilas responds — Emmert is clearly implying that Jay doesn’t understand the complexities of running the NCAA. While it’s true that many others — not just Bilas — don’t realize everything that goes into being the NCAA’s president, that shouldn’t mean that everyone is unable fairly criticize or praise the job that Emmert is doing. At the very least, it’s obvious that many of Bilas’ comments have struck a chord, and considering that some of his suggestions in the past have led to change, it would be unfair to say that he has no clue what he’s talking about. Bilas will remain one of the most respected voices on NCAA issues, whether Emmert likes it or not.
