Rees was the starting quarterback for the Irish at the end of last season, but was suspended to begin the 2012 campaign after being arrested in May after an altercation with police. Everett Golson was named the starter, and played well in the team’s first victory over Navy, in Ireland.
But in Notre Dame’s second game of the season against Purdue, Golson was pulled before the final drive, and Rees drove the Irish down the field for the game-winning field goal. At the time, Brian Kelly said Golson was still the starter, but the move perplexed a lot of fans. Kelly tried to calm everyone by saying there was no quarterback controversy, and that the change was made because Golson was “shaken up”.
Then, in Notre Dame’s most recent game, against Michigan, Golson was again pulled, though this time the move was directly due to poor play. While Rees didn’t light up the scoreboard, he did score the game’s only touchdown on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. While many started to assume that Rees’ new role was that of “closer”, there was still a good portion of the fan base calling for Rees to start.
So now, with Notre Dame sitting at 4-0, there will indeed be a quarterback change. Whether or not Brian Kelly will use Golson in any packages remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Rees will start and get the majority of the snaps this Saturday.
