This story sounds like a SportsCenter commercial for ESPN. Amazingly, it happened in real life.

Many college basketball fans have complained about Notre Dame’s “burn” offense under Mike Brey. According to Pitt’s mascot, ROC the Panther, Jamie Dixon is among them.

Notre Dame sports blogger Aaron Horvath released an email from ND coach Mike Brey that he was forwarded regarding last week’s ACC festivities in NY.

Quick story from  last Monday in NY…  All the mascots were around that day.  I get on the elevator with the Pitt Panther, the Tar Heel mascot… there were probably 4 mascots on the elevator, and they’re all in character.  So I’m saying ‘hi’ to them, but they’re not talking, they’re just sort of bouncing around in character.  Finally, as we’re getting to the floor, out of the Pitt Panther costume comes this guy’s voice: “Hey Coach, Jamie Dixon (Pittsburgh men’s basketball coach) hates the Burn Offense.”  Doors open, Panther walks out.

The “burn” offense, for those wondering, is really just a tactic to use as much of the shot clock as possible before actually attempting to score. The goal is to slow the tempo of the game and frustrate your opponent. Apparently it’s working – at least against Pitt.

Of course, the guy in the mascot costume could have been joking…

Eh, probably not.
