Lou Holtz Is A Fan Of Brian Kelly Becoming More Involved In Notre Dame’s Offense

Brian Kelly came to Notre Dame as an offensive guru, and while he has had success as the head coach of Notre Dame so far, his offenses haven’t always resembled the high octane units that he coached at Cincinnati. Kelly will become more involved in the offense this season. Legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz, who coached in a similar way, believes this is a good move by Kelly.

Holtz spoke to the South Bend Tribune at a fundraiser about Kelly’s move from being a “CEO”-style coach to one who is more hands on with the quarterbacks and the offense.

“I wanted to run the offense, because of this: I could control the game by running the offense. You have to call your plays according to how well your defense is doing. You don’t worry about stats. You worry about wins.

It’s something I believe — you can control the game (by being your own) offensive coordinator, and you can’t in any other way. That’s just me.”

With Everett Golson back in the fold after missing the 2013 season due to an academic violation, Kelly has a major piece in place to get the offense rolling.
