Score: Virginia Tech 13, Rutgers 10
Star(s): Virginia Tech: Marcus Davis 4 Rec, 62 Yds Rutgers: Brandon Coleman 4 Rec, 55 Yds.
Story: Looking at the statistics of the “stars”, it’s easy to see that this wasn’t the best offensive display of this year’s postseason. The two teams combined for one offensive touchdown, less than 400 yards combined, 48 incompletions (just 32 completions) and 70 yards total on the ground. Virginia Tech rushed for three yards on 32 attempts…and won the game.
Rutgers led 10-0 at halftime, but the Hokies were able to tie the game on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Logan Thomas to Corey Fuller early in the fourth quarter. In overtime, the Virginia Tech’s Cody Journell was able to hit a 22-yard field goal, while Rutgers’ Nick Borgese missed a 42-yarder to end the game.
Unfortunately, as lostlettermen.com points out, Virginia Tech cornerback Donaldven Manning made some type of motion towards Rutgers’ players as he left the field at halftime. Considering that the Hokies were wearing helmets as tribute to the Newtown and Blacksburg tragedies, this may have been (if he was doing what’s been suggested) especially ill-timed.
