Apparently 2012 has revealed a significant helium shortage. As a result, the University of Nebraska is cancelling the tradition that called for 5,000 helium balloons to be launched after the first Cornhuskers score each game, LostLettermen is reporting.

Helium apparently plays an important role in hospitals and several other industries, and school officials don’t believe that continuing the tradition at this time is morally responsible.

I’ve got to say, I’m pretty impressed with Nebraska making this decision. It definitely deserves a pat on the back.
