Coach Cal No. 1?

Flickr/Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Last week, we gave you an in-depth look at which college basketball programs have been churning out the highest-paid NBA stars. This time around, we figured we’d switch it up and show you the same data, instead with coaches. While a handful of college basketball’s finest – the Mike Krzyzewski’s and Jim Boeheim’s of the world – have been with their schools for decades, most have moved around quite a bit.

Even some of the most successful headmen in the business, like John Calipari and Roy Williams, have had long stints with multiple programs.

Here are the ten college basketball coaches whose former players currently make the most money in the NBA:

Note: Some players had multiple coaches in their time at school. In those cases, the most recent coach was awarded the player’s salary.

suathletics.syr.edu

10. Jim Boeheim – $30,419,156

Boeheim walked onto the Syracuse basketball team in 1962 and hasn’t left since. Since becoming head coach in 1976, Boeheim has led the Orange to four Final Four appearances and one national title while amassing the second-most D1 victories (920) in history.

As for his current NBA crop, more than half of the total salary of his former players goes to Carmelo Anthony. Dion Waiters and Wesley Johnson are the two next highest paid.

arizonawildcats.com

9. Lute Olson – $42,223,613

Hey, we never said this list had to be made up of current coaches. Lute Olson turned Arizona into a national powerhouse, coaching the Wildcats from 1983 until 2008. He reached the Final Four five times, and won it all in 1997.

Olson’s highest-paid NBA stars include Andre Iguodala, Richard Jefferson, and Channing Frye. The fact that he’s on this list and hasn’t coached in five years is pretty impressive.

gomason.com

8. Paul Hewitt – $44,870,890

Hewitt is easily the most surprising name on here. The reality, however, is that during his eleven seasons with Georgia Tech, he produced some quality pros. Chris Bosh makes over $17 million. Thaddeus Young makes $8.3 million. Anthony Morrow, Derrick Favors and Jarrett Jack each make between $4 million and $6 million.

Remember, Hewitt actually took one of his teams (2004) to the NCAA title game. He’s now the head coach at George Mason.

texassports.com

7. Rick Barnes – $47,799,825

Barnes has been at Texas since 1998, and currently has ten of his alumni in the NBA. Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge make up over $30 million of the total salary, as the majority of former Texas players in the league have become role players.

Barnes’ best finish in the NCAA Tournament belongs to his 2003 team, which reached the Final Four before being knocked off by Carmelo Anthony and Syracuse.

uclabruins.com

6. Ben Howland – $53,751,475

Howland, who was just fired by UCLA, had a great run with the Bruins in the mid-2000s. UCLA actually reached the Final Four three straight years, but never was able to cut down the nets. After a few recent lackluster seasons, Howland finds himself on the unemployment line.

Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love, two staples of his glory years, both make over $13 million each. Arron Afflalo and Trevor Ariza pull in over $7 million each.

gatorzone.com

5. Billy Donovan – $61,998,530

Donovan’s Florida Gators are the main reason that Howland’s UCLA teams never won the NCAA title, as they knocked them off in both 2006 and 2007. The core players from those two teams, Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Corey Brewer, are also a big reason why he’s on this list. David Lee and Mike Miller are two others.

In all, Donovan has ten players he’s coached currently playing in the NBA.

ukathletics.com

4. John Calipari – $62,521,294

Honestly, I thought Coach Cal would be No. 1 on this list between his notable superstars at both Memphis and Kentucky. Heck, he even coached Marcus Camby at UMass, who still makes $4.5 million. But as we noted last week in reference to the UK program, many of his NBA players are still under their rookie contracts.

That means that when players like John Wall, Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins hit the open market, Cal should move up this list. For reference, the highest-paid player in the NBA formerly coached by Calipari is Derrick Rose, at $16.4 million.

goheels.com

3. Roy Williams – $64,602,180

Williams coached at Kansas from 1988 until 2003, and still has four of his former Jayhawks in the NBA – Paul Pierce, Drew Gooden, Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison. Since he’s moved over to North Carolina, he’s produced a ridiculous number of NBA players – 12 of which are still in the league. He also won two national championships, in 2005 and 2009.

Ironically, three of his top four former players (in terms of salary) are from his KU tenure, with Marvin Williams the highest UNC rep. As we noted last week, many of his former North Carolina players have underperformed in the NBA.

uconnhuskies.com

2. Jim Calhoun – $76,047,203

While Calhoun may have called it quits last year, he still has 13 of his former players suiting up in the NBA. Calhoun won three national titles during his time at UConn, and key players from each run still lace it up in the league. He’s got players from three decades still representing his program in the pros.

Rudy Gay, Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon all make over $12 million. Ray Allen and Richard Hamilton are still contributors and pull in modest salaries. The only issue? He’s retired, so he doesn’t really have a shot at reaching No. 1.

goduke.com

1. Mike Krzyzewski – $77,244,780

It’s Duke, again. Coach K boasts 18 of his former players in the NBA right now, led by main breadwinners Carlos Boozer ($15 million), Luol Deng ($13.3 million) and Corey Maggette ($10.9 million). Krzyzewski, like Calhoun, has players from three decades still in the league.

While Coach K has a chance to stay atop this list due to Kyrie Irving’s rise as one of the world’s best players, it’s very likely that John Calipari catches him in a year or two. While most of Krzyzewski’s NBA stars are from the mid-2000s, Cal’s are just entering their primes. Either way, it should be interesting to keep an eye on.

The ACC may not be finished insulting the Big East. The conference began its spring meetings yesterday, and one of the items on the table was the men’s basketball conference tournament – currently being held in Greensboro, North Carolina.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim and Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon were both lobbying for the conference to consider Madison Square Garden for its future tournaments.

“Obviously, coach Boeheim and I are excited about New York, but I also know that Greensboro has a strong, strong presence here at these meetings,” Dixon said. “I think [Madison Square Garden] would be the best thing for the conference. I hope that’s the way they’re headed, but I don’t know that it is.”

Today, ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported that momentum is gaining for the potential move.

Momentum gaining for ACC to hold future hoops tourneys at Madison Square Garden, sources told @espn

— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) May 15, 2013

The ACC’s contract to keep the tournament in Greensboro runs out in 2016, so the earliest this could potentially happen is for the 2016-2017 season. And of course, the (new) Big East is still in the mix as well. But with the size and draw that the ACC now has, it could potentially look like the better option for MSG. We’ll find out soon enough.

Hint: Kentucky is not No. 1.

Flickr/401(K) 2012

One of the biggest factors that goes into every major high school basketball recruit’s decision is whether his college of choice will help prepare him to get to the next level – the NBA. In the end, the goal is to reach the league, and the higher he is drafted, the better.

Fans also love to argue about which programs are the best “NBA factories”. Of course, there are a number of methods you can use to derive your results. You can go by the number of draft picks over a certain time period, or the number of players currently in the NBA. We thought we’d try something a bit different. We took the salaries for each player (according to ESPN) in the NBA in 2012-2013 and totalled them up, by college.

Some of the results were surprising. Here’s what we found:

15. Michigan State: $27,504,014 – 5 players

Surprisingly, Michigan State is the lone program from the Big Ten in the top 15. Carrying the load is Zach Randolph, who made $16.5 million this past season. Jason Richardson, Shannon Brown, Alan Anderson and Draymond Green round out the Spartans’ representation in the NBA. If Green keeps playing well for the Warriors, he’ll eventually get a much better payday ($850,000).

14. Marquette: $29,453,621 – 6 players

Marquette’s inclusion is another example of how one superstar, in this case Dwyane Wade, can land you on this list. Wade’s ridiculous salary (over $17 million) combined with modest (I realize how absurd the word sounds given the context) contributions from Wesley Matthews ($6.5 million) and Steve Novak ($4 million) accounts for almost all of the Golden Eagles’ NBA paychecks. Jimmy Butler could be the next to get paid after emerging in the 2013 playoffs.

13. Syracuse: $30,419,156 – 6 players

Carmelo Anthony made over $19 million this season, which makes up more than half the total salary of former Orange stars. Wesley Johnson and Dion Waiters, two players who were both drafted No. 4 overall in different years (2010 and 2012, respectively), both made around $4 million as well. Donte Greene, Fab Melo and Kris Joseph account for the remainder.

12. LSU: $30,519,365 – 7 players

Surprised? I was. The Bayou Bengals have four players in the NBA who made $6 million of more this past season – Tyrus Thomas, Marcus Thornton, Glen Davis and Brandon Bass. For a school that has only made the NCAA Tournament once in the past seven years (2009), the Tigers are certainly well-represented in the NBA.

11. Wake Forest: $36,521,836 – 6 players

Wake Forest has produced two of the biggest stars in the NBA today – Tim Duncan ($9.6 million) and Chris Paul ($17.8 million). Al-Farouq Aminu, James Johnson, Jeff Teague and Ish Smith also contributed to the Demon Deacons’ inclusion.

10. North Carolina: $40,939,193 – 16 players

There are twelve UNC alums who made between $1.5 million and $3.5 million this past season. The only Tar Heel with a higher salary was Marvin Williams, checking in at $8.3 million. The two main reasons UNC isn’t higher? Their stars from the early 2000s are older and playing for league minimums (Stackhouse, Jamison) and their recent alums have mostly turned out to be average NBA players (Zeller, Hansbrough, Ellington).

9. Georgia Tech: $44,870,890 – 7 players

For a school with only seven players in the NBA, Georgia Tech is sure getting a lot of bang for its buck. Chris Bosh ($17.5 million) is the main breadwinner, but Thaddeus Young, Jarrett Jack, Derrick Favors, Anthony Morrow and Will Bynum all made between $3 million and $9 million. Iman Shumpert is the seventh Yellow Jacket on the list, and he’ll eventually earn a higher salary with the way he’s played for the Knicks.

8. Texas: $47,799,825 – 10 players

Texas has two superstars raking in the dough. Kevin Durant made more than $16 million, while LaMarcus Aldridge pulled in over $13 million. Daniel Gibson, Tristan Thompson and D.J. Augustin also made between $3 million and $5 million each. Avery Bradley ($1.6 million) could be in line for a salary boost soon as well.

Next: 7-1 >>>

While I can’t prove that I actually “bleed” orange, I can prove that I represent my school in almost everything I wear and everything I do. As a 2006 Syracuse graduate, I was a freshman for the Carmelo-led 2003 NCAA title season and a senior when Gerry McNamara went from “overrated” to Big East Tournament hero. Since my first year as an undergrad in Lawrinson Hall, I’ve accumulated a pretty extensive collection of SU-related gear.

I decided to take a picture of each Syracuse item I own – all in all there are 73. Before the Great Hoboken Flood of 2012 (Hurricane Sandy), I had well over 100 pieces, but the Hudson River washed away things like Christmas tree ornaments, sports gear and my yearbook. Sad. Still, for someone living in an 800-square-foot apartment, I think I’ve done pretty well.

If you’ve got me beat (doesn’t just have to be SU), hit us up and let us know. We’d love to display your collection on College Spun as well. Yup, that’s a challenge.

How did your school do?

Enoch Lai/wikimedia

One of the major talking points for college football bragging rights concerns how your school’s players perform at the next level. While there is no guarantee that being a great college player will lead to professional success, there is something to be said about teams that send a lot of players to the league.

We decided to take a look at the 2013 NFL Draft and rank which schools sent the most talent to the league. Then we compared that to each team’s 2012 campaign and final AP ranking to see if the schools with the best NFL talent really did outclass the others.

We used a reverse point scoring system to rank the teams. There were 254 players drafted in 2013 — so the first overall pick (Eric Fisher) earned 254 points for Central Michigan. Conversely, this year’s Mr. Irrelevant (Justice Cunningham) earned 1 point for South Carolina. Once we matched up the corresponding value for every player drafted, we totaled them up by school and ranked them from highest to lowest. Is it a perfect science? Of course not. But it’s an attempt at determining which college football programs produced the most NFL talent in a mathematical way.

Without further ado, here are the top 25 teams that dominated the 2013 NFL Draft:

The former Syracuse star was pumped about being taken by the Giants at No. 19 overall, and his friends took video of his reaction during the phone call. The best part, however, comes once he hangs up. Check it out:

NFL Draft fun.

In the 2012 NFL draft, quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III were picked first and second overall, while two other quarterbacks were also selected in the first round.

This year, things don’t seem as rosy at the quarterback position and no player is a lock.

According to Scouts Inc.’s Top 32, the top two players in the draft are Luke Joeckel, offensive tackle from Texas A&M and Eric Fisher, offensive tackle from Central Michigan.

The coverage of the 2013 draft is less focused on quarterbacks this year, with Scouts Inc. not having a quarterback in its top 25. The only quarterback ranked in the top 32 is Geno Smith at No. 29.

Other top quarterbacks in the draft this year include USC’s Matt Barkley, Tennessee’s Tyler Bray, and Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib. Here’s a little bit of background information on all of the top guys:

Reddit

Geno Smith – West Virginia: NFL combine results – 4.59 sec. 40 yd. dash, 33.5 in. vertical jump, 124.0 in. broad jump

Most remember Smith for his outstanding performance against Clemson in the 2012 Discover Orange Bowl where he threw for 407 yards and six touchdowns. In his last season as a Mountaineer, Smith threw for 47 touchdowns and only six interceptions, giving him a 163.9 rating. Smith is more of a pass thrower than a pass rusher, and there are teams in the NFL that have Smith on their radar because of that. In a year with so many other talented players in positions other than quarterback, if any QB is going in the first round it’s Smith.

Matt Barkley – USC

Due to his separated shoulder suffered last season, USC quarterback Matt Barkley was unable to participate in the NFL combine. A high school All-American, Barkley continued his success while at USC. In his first three seasons, Barkley improved his touchdown-to-interception ratio and ended his career with school passing records for yardage and touchdowns. Unfortunately, USC’s hopes for a national championship and Barkley’s hopes for a Heisman trophy were ended with Barkley’s drop in efficiency from previous years and his injury. When an NFL prospect gets injured, it sometimes gives scouts a bit more skepticism. With Barkley’s outstanding capabilities before his injury, look for him to be drafted as early as the second round.

There’s a lot to say about Bray both on and off the field. On the field, he has a powerful arm that helped him break Peyton Manning’s school record for touchdown passes in the first four games of a season. Bray finished his junior season throwing for 3,612 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Off the field, Bray is said to have a slight attitude problem, and has trouble making the right calls. Some have compared him to Brett Favre due to his powerful arm but inability to constantly make the right play. Although he has a mighty arm, Bray struggled when playing against SEC powerhouse teams such as Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. It’s hard to see where Bray will end up, but both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans are apparently considering him.

Ryan Nassib – Syracuse: NFL Combine results: 5.06 sec. 40 yd. dash, 28.5 in. vertical jump, 105.0 in. broad jump

Playing for a team that hasn’t had a double-digit winning season since 2001 can bring frustration, but Nassib earned a lot of publicity in his time at ‘Cuse. In his first season as a starter, Nassib threw for 2,334 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. In his senior season, Nassib improved substantially by throwing for 3,749 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Current Buffalo Bills head coach and former Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone has been quoted saying that the Bills are looking for a new quarterback. With ties to Nassib, Marrone may try to draft the quarterback to help improve Buffalo’s recent slump.

Here at CollegeSpun, we decided we’d get into drafting mode ourselves — many of our writers chimed in on the quarterback debate, predicting which signal-caller would be the first off of the board. Predictions are below:

Dustin Stinson – Ohio State

I think Geno Smith will be drafted first. He’s the most talked about the most athletic in the QB class in this draft.

Tim Fontenault – UConn

It’s lucky that this class has an NBA Draft class as terrible because this is the worst NFL Draft class I can remember in a long time. Teams that are looking for a long-term quarterback should wait a year or two. But if someone’s looking for a plug right now, it’s Geno Smith. Yes, he struggled at times in the Big XII, but out of all the less-than-stellar quarterbacks this year, he is the least likely to end up working out with JaMarcus Russell in pursuit of redemption. All bias aside, Ryan Nassib failed to wow me when I saw him play up close. To give you an idea of what that says, Syracuse beat UConn 40-10 that day. This is a guy who was behind a basketball player on the depth chart. I don’t see him being anything special in the NFL, so maybe the Jets will take him.

Antonio Venegas – Ohio State

I think Geno Smith is off the board first. Best QB in draft and teams at the top need a QB. I’m thinking he lands in Buffalo or Cleveland. The reason for Cleveland? It’s the Browns. They’re bound to make an odd pick at some point in the draft and I’m not sold on Brandon Weeden.

Dylan Hicks – Missouri

The 2013 QB class is very weak. Personally I don’t think any of the top QB prospects are NFL ready and a can’t miss talent. However, Geno Smith has the look of an NFL-ready quarterback. He has the downfield arm strength coaches love and is fairly mobile. He’s no RGIII when it comes to mobility but Smith has shown good footwork. Geno will go first, but don’t be surprised if we see a run-off of Nassib and Barkley similar to how Gabbert and Ponder went two years ago.

Annie Dunbar – Kentucky

Geno Smith will be the first quarterback drafted 6th to the Browns. It seems to me like the Browns are always in desperate need for a solid QB who can actually complete passes – Smith is their man. He was roughly 72% for pass completion and threw 98 touchdowns in his college career. Smith or bust.

Dan Lazinsk – UConn

I think Buffalo takes Ryan Nassib at #8. Doug Marrone coached Nassib at ‘Cuse and the Bills have said they’re looking for a quarterback. If Buffalo wants Nassib I don’t think they will pass him at 8. It’s too big of a risk to wait it out, someone will take him.
