Notre Dame Is Moving To The ACC In All Sports Except Football

Note: This is an ongoing story. Rivals’ Pete Sampson first reported the “potential” news last night, but it’s since been confirmed by ESPN and The ACC itself. Scroll below for a timeline.

Last Night: In a huge surprise turn of events, Notre Dame is close to joining the ACC for all sports, except football and hockey, according to Rivals.com writer Pete Sampson.

UPDATE: ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is now reporting the news – see below. Welcome to the ACC, ND.

UPDATE 2: And now the ACC is officially reporting the news: Here is a link to the official release from the conference.

Some Notes From The Release:

  • The ACC’s exit fee is now equivalent to over $50mm.
  • The Irish will play five football games per year against ACC foes.
  • ND Athletic Director Swarbrick’s quotes: “We have monitored the changing conference landscape for many months and have concluded that moving to the ACC is the best course of action for us” and “We are able to maintain our historic independence in football, join in the ACC’s non-BCS bowl package, and provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports.”
  • ND will be the 11th college in the ACC in the top 58 of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” – higher than all other major conferences.

UPDATE 3: Eric Hansen of The South Bend Tribune reporting that, for now, this doesn’t affect Notre Dame’s contract with NBC.
