Today, Brian Kelly officially kicked off the beginning of the football season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with his opening press conference.

Here are some of the most important and interesting things that he had to say:

  • “2012 is a new year…there’s a new dynamic to our football team…new players have emerged as leaders”
  • “We want to play these types of schedules…You can’t climb Mt. Everest all at once…but with great preparation you can make it to the top…we have to take it one game at a time”
  • “We will have a new quarterback versus Navy…we believe we are going to hit the ground running”
  • “This year’s about doing it, not talking about it…that will probably be the theme [this year]“
  • On what constitutes success this season: “Winning. In everything we do on the field and off the field….but we’ll be judged by wins and losses”
  • What the QBs need to improve to earn their spot: “Tommy needs to cut down on his errors…the other guys just need to keep getting experience”
  • Competition at right guard between Mike Golic Jr. and Nick Martin
  • Nick Martin, Christian Lombard, and Tate Nichols all in competition at right tackle
  • Safety Austin Collinsworth is the only player out for fall camp. WR Luke Massa is limited, but cleared.
  • Kelly feels very comfortable with four corners: Bennett Jackson, Lo Wood, Josh Atkinson, Cam McDaniel — Jalen Brown needs to keep working
  • Freshman KeiVarae Russell moved to defense, CB
  • Kendall Moore, Jarrett Grace, Dan Fox, Joe Schmidt will all rotate at MLB alongside Te’o while Carlo Calabrese is suspended
  • All four QBs have put in “the necessary time to be the quarterback at Notre Dame”
  • Timetable for Austin Collinsworth: Expecting to return in late October/November — it was a 6 month injury
  • On QB reps in camp relative to Tommy Rees: “Not every rep you take is for Navy…Tommy will have opportunities to stay sharp”
