Marcus Paige Laughs After Hearing ESPN Ranked Roy Williams As The 16th Best Coach
In the college basketball offseason, there often isn’t a ton to write about – online publications (ourselves included) have to get creative in order to keep traffic consistent. Even the big players, like ESPN.com, will come out with list-type articles that attempt to rank teams, recruits, current players or even coaches. The Worldwide Leader released one such post over the last month, and it deals with the top 50 college basketball coaches in the country.
As we noted last week, two SEC coaches – Florida’s Billy Donovan and Kentucky’s John Calipari – finished 1-2 in the ranking. However, North Carolina head coach Roy Williams, who has won two titles in his time at Chapel Hill, was ranked at No. 16. Tar Heels fans, as you’d imagine, thought his ranking was disrespectful. It’s clear that current point guard Marcus Paige feels the same way.

Marcus Paige chuckles when told Roy was 16th on the http://t.co/wTzBqApd4t list, shakes his head. “No chance that’s even remotely close.”

If we’re being honest, it is hard to disagree. Sure, Donovan, Calipari, Coach K, Rick Pitino and Tom Izzo all deserve to be ranked where they are. But ESPN put a number of coaches – Fred Hoiberg, Tony Bennett, Sean Miller, Gregg Marshall, Bo Ryan – who have nowhere near the same postseason success as Williams, ahead of him on the list.
UNC fans – what do you think?
